Instruction in the standards requires a focus not only on the learner concepts and competencies but the supportive practices employed by the adults in the classroom setting.

Concepts and Competencies
The learner will:
- Label types of media and what information can be gained (e.g. recipes from a cookbook, prices from an advertisement)
- Locate information on identified topics using media (e.g. music, books, maps, TV programming, newspapers, magazines, movies, Internet, applications, advertising)
Supportive Practices
The adult will:
- Provide a variety of resources on topics that interest children (e.g. books, pictures, authentic objects)
- Model using resources to get information
- Support children (e.g. ask questions, encourage thinking) while children are working on a project based on research
- Talk about the resources you use to gain specific information (e.g. recipes from a cookbook, prices from an advertisement)
